Description
This is not your grandfather's M-3! Okay, on second thought, it may very well have been. But it is now a well cleaned, optically enhanced, and customized little rugged 6X 30, originally brought home by the officer or ground pounder who carried it during the last Big One.It arrived here in rough cosmetic condition, with both prism covers having been desecrated in an effort to conceal its GI heritage. Deep scrapes obliterated any and all stenciling and information.
Someone also removed the left ocular reticle, but left the housing that I had to remove in order to get the prism cluster plate out. All four COVERED Bak-4 prisms were then carefully cleaned one at a time and their frosted sides blackened. A custom touch that further increases brightness and contrast by controlling stray light. As do those prism "hats", or covers.
Believe this was called for as the optics in these are bare glass! Thats right, no coating as was done after 1943. So these are AT LEAST 75 years young. And provide crystal clear sharp 3D views, unlike many other vintage bins. Better than when they were first issued, in fact.
Besides sanding and recoating the prism covers in an oil based gloss enamel, I also hit the objective end caps. Finally the chassis was given a single coat of deep red enamel yielding a nice cordovan leather like look.
Combined with the really stout leather strap it came with that had been riveted on, I believe this is one sharp binocular in all respects. The strap was conditioned, shortened a bit, and reattached as shown. Comes in a lightly padded after market Cabela's nylon carry case.
The IF EPs are smooth and light, easily focused when the bins are up for viewing with the sides of the thumbs.
A really rugged little gem with B&L and martial DNA and lots of History. All spiffed up for your future adventures and life's battles.
