Description
RARE 1799 Wilkes County NORTH CAROLINA 50-Acre Land Deed for Brushy Mountain Apple Orchard to William Turner Hampton. Signed by NC Governor Benjamin Williams in his first month in office.Original 18th-century North Carolina document that has been professionally repaired/restored and framed/matted. Frame measures 20" x 23". Document measures 12-1/2" x 15-1/2". Signed by North Carolina Governor Benjamin Williams (bio below). The deed was written for William Turner Hampton (1764-1834) and was for a 50-acre Brushy Mountain Apple Orchard property. The ownership lineage of the property is also documented on a small piece of paper attached to the back of the frame (see pic). Apparently, this property was owned by various families over the years, including the Hamptons, Adams, Calloway, Peden, Duncan, Horton and Morehouse families. Additional information, including a transcription of the document are found on the backside of the frame as well.
The deed is the earliest I've ever seen from Wilkes County, North Carolina. The pre-printed form is legible, but the handwritten portions are somewhat faded, though still legible. There are some chips to the document with minor loss of text (see pic), but the professional restoration that was undertaken in 1975 has helped to preserve and prevent any future loss. A really nice framed original piece of Wilkes County history!
