Description
A rare and very early partially printed court order from Pomfret, Windham County, Connecticut. The Sheriff is commanded "in His Majesty's Name" to seize the goods , Chattals, and Lands of Joseph Cary of Pomfret to satisfy a debt to Benjamin Hubbard. If Joseph Cary does not have either the funds or property to pay the debt "You are hereby commanded to take the Body of the said Cary and him commit to the Keeper of the Gaol in Windham in the County aforesaid, within the said Prison; who is likewise hereby Commanded to Receive the said Cary and him safely to Keep until he Pay the said Hubbard the full sum above mentioned and be by him Released and also satisfy your Fees." From the days of debtor's prisons. Clearly dated the 29th Day of February in the 13th Year of his Majesty's Reign Annoque Domini, 1739/40." His Majesty would have been King George II.
