Original Official Records of the Rebellion : Map 18 - Yorktown to Fort Monroe

$ 26.4

Availability: 100 in stock
  • Restocking Fee: No
  • All returns accepted: Returns Accepted
  • Condition: Original Plate from the Series printed in the 1890's. This plate was still in the original paper wrappers, was never bound in a book. It has no residue / damage from having a tab removed. Edges are slightly chippy - as happens to almost all of these plates. They are printed on a heavier paper stock that tends to get a little brittle around the edges over time. Any significant edge tears have been archivally repaired with thin tissue on the back. This plate has an embossed stamp in the upper corner, near the plate number / margin line - upper right corner. It would be mostly covered by a mat, and is fairly unobtrusive in any event.

    Description

    Atlas Plate
    No. 18
    from the
    ATLAS TO ACCOMANY THE

    and CONFEDERATE ARMIES
    Printed from 1891-1895
    by the Government Printing Office,
    Washington, D.C.
    ======================================
    Condition : overall good or better.
    Never bound in a book, this plate came from a collection of odd volumes of the original
    paper-wrapped sections that the Atlas was originally issued in.
    As such, it has no tab on the back and will lay very flat when properly matted.
    Paper is a heavier stock and tends to be a bit chippy along the edges.
    Lightly and fairly evenly age-toned. Slight darkening of the center fold.
    This map has a blind-embossed stamp in the upper right corner,
    at the margin line / near the Plate Number line.
    The stamp has been reduced / flattened as much as possible,
    and is very unobtrusive.  If matted, the mat would cover much of it.
    I hope it shows properly in the photos.
    The frame in the photos is NOT included !
    It is just to show how nice the plate can look when famed.
    The plate will be shipped to you safely rolled
    and packed in a shipping tube.
    ======================================
    PLATE No. 18 (XVIII) :
    "Military Reconnaissance of the Dept. of Virginia"
    Map of the area from Fort Monroe to Williamsburg, including Yorktown.
    Showing the location of Rebel Fortifications, Depots, and Batteries.
    The smaller side of the map is a more operational view of the campaign
    area - again showing troop dispositions, and showing locations of signal towers.
    One of the more beautiful plates - this plate has great colors,
    browns / greens for terrain, blue / red for troop dispositions.
    Most of the plates are made up of multiple smaller maps
    that often don't all relate to one battle or campaign.
    This map is all about the Peninsular Campaign.
    ============================================
    The Official Records of the War of the Rebellion are even to this day
    the single greatest publication on a single conflict in the entire world.
    Eventually totaling 128 volumes, the set was printed between 1881 and 1901.
    The set was never intended for public sale, but was given to select outlets
    (libraries, government offices, etc.) to be accessible to the general public.
    From 1891 to 1895 a project was undertaken to compile an atlas volume
    to accompany the set. Handsomely printed in multiple colors, these maps
    are among the finest military maps ever printed.
    It is impossible to know how many copies of the Atlas were ever actually
    printed / distributed.
    As of 2016 the OLCC only finds 255 copies
    left in public institutional locations.
