    Description

    Original 1862 map of Richmond, Virginia, and vicinity, printed more than 155 years ago.
    The map was published in the December 6, 1862 edition of
    Harper's Weekly,
    shortly before the crushing defeat of General Burnside's Army of the Potomac at the Battle of Fredericksburg during the Civil War.
    The image area measures 35 x 23.s cm [13¾" x 9¼"].
    The map locates 19 Rebel forts protecting Richmond and displays the range and coverage areas within cannon range of the forts' artillery.
    Other details include roads, bridges, railroads, and natural features.
    Specific named places and features include the plantation of Dr. French, on the Woodbury Bridge Road; Hollywood Cemetery; Fort Johnston; Brook Run Turnpike; Fredericksburg & Potomac Railroad; Manchester; Broad Rock Island; Harrison; Road to Coal Mines; Academy Hill; James River; Fort Jackson; Virginia Central Railway; and Meadow Bridge.
