Description

A wonderful early document from Newburyport, Massachusetts, dated in 1768 addressed to the Treasurer of the Town of Newburyport to pay for "2 Chairs for Town School at 12 Shillings per peace (sic) fair full money", signed by Thomas Bayley, 1768.  This document also contains notes and the signatures of some historical figures very important in Newburyport history, including Daniel Farnham, who was Newburyport's first representative to the General Court and William Atkins, both signatories of Newburyport's famous "Waterside Petition", which is still celebrated today.  The Petition was a long list of grievances signed by individuals and presented to the General Court about the treatment of the Waterside residents by the Town of Newbury.  It was dated in 1763, and it was vigorously opposed by the Town of Newbury.  The General Court approved the Petition in early 1764 thereby separating  Waterside from the Town of Newbury and creating the Town of Newburyport.  One of the complaints in the Petition was the lack of schools in Waterside, so the purchase of chairs for the new school in 1769 has some historical significance.  It is rare to find one of these early American Colonial Era documents related to a significant historical event.  Approximately 8 1/4" x 2" in size, one fold line, dark ink.
