    Description

This is an original document dated August 1776, Dartmouth, Massachusetts, where then Major Thomas Kempton has written orders to Benjamin Wilcox to gather a regiment of men and weapons and march to Rhode Island to enforce the army there...signed at lower right by Kempton, addressed on bacl to Benjamin Wilcox, orders are 8x8, folds, else a scarce order to march.
Major Thomas Kempton (1740-1806) had just finished eight months of service as a captain at the siege of Boston. He hadn’t reenlisted in the Continental Army at the end of 1775. But Gen. George Washington had asked the New England colonies to raise some militia regiments for a short period—two months in this case—to augment his depleted Continental forces. So the General Court gave Kempton a promotion from captain to lieutenant colonel and told him to report again.
Captain Benjamin Wilcox marched from Dartmouth to Howland's Ferry, Rhode Island to repel the British Forces that arrived at Newport on 07 Dec 1776.
