    Description

    This Colonial Kittery Maine document or Writ of Arrest is only missing about 15% of its text, but was pieced together from 6 shards and bears heavy archival tape restoration. Signed by two prominent Colonial Indian War Veterans, Major Joseph Hammond (1645-1709) and Major Charles Frost II (1678-1724), it details a legal proceeding by James Chadbourn of Kittery against Nicholas Gowen over a matter if five pounds. Chadbourn was successful and the writ authorizes attachment of Gowen's property and/or the Sheriff or his deputies committing "him unto our Gaol in Kittery... and him safely to keep until he pay the full sums abovementioned with your fees"  Dated June 29, 1707 and signed by Jos. Hamond and attested by Charles Ffrost. Measures 7 3/4 by 9 1/2". Again, condition is poor with the losses and taped repairs, but a rare 313 year old Maine document.
